RAGLAN CASTLE

Wales’s youngest stone castle, Raglan has everything a good honest castle should have - spiral staircases, crenellated turrets, lots of slits for firing arrows at baddies, a pondweed-covered moat, and even a crackpot owner known as Edward the Inventor.

Cadw’s aim for the project was to make the castle more attractive to non-traditional audiences and create a strong digital offering. We designed and built eight fanciful mechanical contraptions to install in different parts of the castle, as if left behind ready to be discovered. Using the new Cadw digital app, visitors could overhear young Edward trying to ‘sell’ his inventions to various castle staff as ingenious solutions to their problems. Families with younger children could use the inventions as the basis of a Quest to discover which of eight machines the historical Edward actually invented.

The more formal exhibit areas were enlivened with large bespoke murals in the gatehouse showing scenes from Raglan Castle’s history.
