A Whole Newtown of Ideas
Sarah Briscoe House - March 30,31
Newtown is in Powys in mid Wales. It’s not particularly ‘New’ since it’s been around since the 12th century.
The town itself is rather pleasant with the River Severn flowing through it, beautiful buildings which showcase its heritage in textile mills, and a steady mix of tourists shopping on the High Street, which contains the very first WHSmith.
Sarah Briscoe House is located on the High Street, and is currently the home of the Robert Owen Museum, the local Tourist Information, and the Town Council who use the magnificent Council Chamber.
We, along with other consultants have been brought on board to progress plans to RIBA 3 to allow for the redevelopment of the building. What this means at present is a little unclear. The local architects are looking at adding a lift into the 19th century Arts and Crafts style interiors, while the activity and business plans seem to suggest a mixed use interior of cafe, multi purpose spaces and an exhibition that declares its love for Newtown and its global influence. We shall see how things develop.
